How to Remove Location Data From Photos
Many phone photos store the place where they were taken inside the file. Re-saving the photo with the compress tool removes this hidden data, and you can turn location off at the source in your phone settings.

What is hidden in a photo
Photos often contain EXIF data: the date, the camera or phone model and sometimes the GPS coordinates of where you stood. If you share the original file, others may be able to read this.
Remove it with this site
- Open the compress tool and drop in the photo.
- Download the result.
The tool redraws the picture and saves a new file. The hidden data is not copied across. We tested this: a photo with GPS and camera tags went in, and the saved file had none of them.
Check it yourself
On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties, then the Details tab and look for GPS. On a Mac, open the photo in Preview and use Tools, then Show Inspector. Compare the original with the new file.
Stop it at the source
- Camera settings on most phones let you turn off saving location with photos.
- When sharing from a phone, the share screen often has an option to leave out location. Look for Options.
Good to know
Many social sites remove this data when you post, but not all apps and not email attachments. Removing it yourself is the safe option. The picture itself is not changed, so people can still recognize places that are visible in it.
