How to Reduce Image Size for Email
Resize the photos to about 1920 pixels wide and save them at around 75 percent quality. Each photo usually drops from several megabytes to a few hundred kilobytes, and the picture still looks fine on screen.
Know the limit
Gmail allows attachments up to 25 MB in one message. If your files add up to more, Gmail turns them into Google Drive links instead of attaching them. Other email services have their own limits, and the person receiving the email may have a lower one.
Shrink the photos
- Open the compress tool and drop in all your photos.
- Set quality to about 75 percent.
- Set max width to 1920 px. For viewing on a screen this is plenty.
- Download everything as one ZIP, or attach the files one by one.
Why this works
A modern phone photo is 4000 pixels wide or more, but a laptop screen shows about 1920 at most. The extra pixels only add weight. Reducing the width does most of the saving, and lowering quality a little does the rest.
If it is still too big
- Choose a max width of 1280 px.
- Lower quality to 65 percent.
- Send fewer photos per email.
- Use a Drive or cloud link for the original files.
Keep the originals
Compressing makes new copies. Your original photos are not changed, so keep them if you may need the full quality later, for printing for example.
