How to Compress an Image to 100 KB
In short
Lower the max width first, then the quality, and check the size shown after each try. This tool does not aim for an exact size, so you adjust and look at the result until you reach your target.
How to do it
- Drop the image into the compress tool.
- Pick WebP as output if the site allows it. If it must be JPG, choose JPG.
- Set max width to 1280 px. This is the biggest saver.
- Move the quality slider down in steps of 5 and watch the size shown on the result.
- Stop when the size is under your target and the picture still looks fine.
Rough starting points
These depend a lot on the photo, so treat them as places to start, not promises.
- 1 MB: 1920 px wide, quality 75 to 80.
- 500 KB: 1600 px wide, quality 70.
- 100 KB: 800 to 1024 px wide, quality 60 to 70.
Why you cannot just set "100 KB"
How small a file gets depends on the picture. A photo of a plain wall shrinks far more than a photo of a busy street at the same settings. That is why the reliable way is to try, look at the size, and adjust.
If it will not get small enough
- Lower the max width again.
- Do not go under about 50 percent quality. Blocky patches start to show.
- If the original is a PNG screenshot, converting to JPG or WebP will help a lot.
Check the result
Open the downloaded file and look at it at full size before you upload it. A form that wants "under 100 KB" usually also wants a readable face or text, so check that too.
