Best Image Size for Websites
In short
For most pages, 1200 to 1920 pixels wide is enough for large images, with files under about 200 KB where you can. Use WebP or JPG for photos. These are rules of thumb, not strict limits.
Why it matters
Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Smaller images load faster, especially on phones with a slow connection, and visitors are less likely to leave.
Rules of thumb
- Full-width banner1600 to 1920 px wide
- Image inside an article800 to 1200 px wide
- Thumbnails300 to 600 px wide
- Target sizeOften under 200 KB for article images
Match the width to the largest size the image is actually shown. Pictures shown at 600 px do not need 4000 px.
Pick the format
- Photos: WebP, or JPG at 70 to 80 percent quality.
- Logos and graphics: SVG if you have it, otherwise PNG or WebP.
- Transparent images: WebP or PNG.
More about this in what WebP is.
How to prepare them
- Drop the images into the compress tool.
- Choose a max width that fits where the image appears.
- Pick WebP output and quality near 75.
- Download the ZIP and upload the files to your site.
Retina screens
Sharp screens can show more detail, so some sites use images up to twice the display width. Do this only for images where crispness matters, such as a main product photo.
