Can You Make a JPG Transparent?
No. JPG has no transparency at all. To have a see-through background you need PNG or WebP. Converting a JPG to PNG does not remove its background; it only changes the file type.
Why not
A JPG stores a colour for every pixel and nothing else. There is no place to say "this pixel is see-through". So any transparent area is filled with a colour, usually white, when saved as JPG.
Formats that can
- PNG: transparency works everywhere.
- WebP: transparency plus smaller files.
- SVG: for logos and simple shapes.
What converting does
The JPG to PNG tool changes the format. It does not know what is background and what is subject, so a white background stays white. In our test, converting a 524 KB photo made a 2.8 MB PNG that looked the same.
How to get a real transparent background
You need to remove the background in an editor first, then save as PNG or WebP. Most photo editors and many phone gallery apps have a "remove background" or "cut out subject" function. Save the result as PNG to keep it.
Going the other way
If you convert a PNG with transparency to JPG, the see-through parts become white. Keep this in mind for logos placed on coloured backgrounds.
